Yesterday I sat down to rest my stupid leg on my trip back to my room. Sometimes I break out the phone and read some news while I wait. This time I pressed the Local tab, and for fun selected Akron.
Akron, Ohio that is. The home of every important tire company when I was a child. Goodyear Aircraft, who employed my father all his life to work on, first blimps, those wonder aircraft that escorted ships across the Atlantic during the war, and finally space craft. What a city.
I've written about growing up in North Hill, home of all the Italian immigrants and infiltrated in my childhood by immigrants from all over the country and world for employment in the factories. We had to tell mom if we were going to the black Wagners for the afternoon, or the white Wagners.
The International Institute of Akron was on the other side of the street from my junior high school. It welcomed immigrants and refugees from around the world to their new home in Akron. We went to school with children for whom English was a second language. I walked to school with Sonja Jones, who lived with her grandparents a street behind me. Sonja's family was from East Germany.
Where am I going with all this? The headline on the local, Akron news yesterday was the lockdown at Forest Hill Elementary School because ICE was patrolling the neighborhood. Driving their stinking cars up and down Damon Street, so the kids couldn't go out for recess.
Tears rolled down. A friend stopped and asked and I told her, the effing feds are trolling for immigrants at my elementary school. She said "Well, they voted him in!" and I lost it. I have not checked, but I sincerely doubt Akron voted red. Never, ever! Those children did not vote. They just went to school, like kids. Babies, five year old kindergartners. Ten year olds off to middle school in a year. Still walking to school, no one lives far enough away for the bus. She apologized.
I am overwhelmed by the knowledge I cannot throw enough sand, support enough marches, write enough letters, weave enough towels to abate this cruelty from the capital.
I read a post on BlueSky the reason for targeting schools. They want to arrest the children to lure out the parents to arrest them and deport entire families. The cruelty, the hatred, is beyond the pale. This is not the country I was taught it was. Some school districts at least are announcing that they refuse to comply (it is illegal for ICE to enter schools and places of worship even though Trump has said they can), will not let ICE in. Meanwhile Oklahoma is trying to require immigration status of students in order for them to enroll in public school.
ReplyDeleteI know, Joanne. I know!
ReplyDeleteI am feeling exactly the same. Could not read Ellen's post about weeping. The ONLY way I can hold on is to hide! Who ever thought that the world you and I have shared----since we are the same age!----would be gone before we leave it??
Those with money instead of hearts creating chaos and heartache on every front? And, of course, the neediest people are the ones who pay the greatest price. I am walking in a daze, hiding behind jigsaw puzzles and audio books to keep from thinking. And, yes, the hardest part is our awareness of the atrocities and our inability and feeling of helplessness to do anything to stop it all.
It does help a little, though, to know that we are not alone in our alarm/dismay. It's like we are watching a horror movie with our arms around each other. Hugs/love for you from me.
I had a cry this morning too, angry writing, and then some rage cleaning.
ReplyDeleteSo very moving! Well done, sharing your thoughts with us.
ReplyDeleteThe distress this administration creates has spread far beyond your national borders - here in tiny NZ we watch with horror and alarm as all the values of freedom, welcome to immigrants and so on the your nation claimed to represent in that statue of liberty go down a toilet.
ReplyDeleteWe live in evil times, alas, and they are just getting started.
ReplyDeleteIt is so disturbing. What a cruel bunch! And Dr Phil, and who knows who else is out with the cameras.
ReplyDeleteMy heart breaks for you Joanne. It's such incredible cruelty and the words those Ice monsters use on the people they're rounding up are demeaning and awful and the shackles! He and his puppet masters are grooming us all for more cruelty to come. There is absolutely no end to his hate and cruelty. The whole world has such contempt for what America has become in one short week. But the resistance is growing. His fall will come.

I am beyond sorry. I mourn for your country and fear for the world.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard and painful for me to believe the level of cruelty and lack of humanity of this administration.
ReplyDeleteIt is unbelievable. Then you think what on earth next?
ReplyDeleteYou are not alone-hard to say if democrats will get a backbone- What does it take??? Resist and shelter seems the only option at the moment- DC following the hitler playbook to the letter. WHAT DOES IT TAKE???
ReplyDeleteJoanne I loved your fond memories here, but it broke my heart reading this. I am at a real loss for words, I just know I wake up in the mornings in disbelief we're going thru all of this again. A very popular Mexican restaurant just closed up the street from me because of these same patrols.
ReplyDeleteThe hatred has got to stop! How can so many support the cruelty he so obviously enjoys?
ReplyDeleteYou're not alone, Joanne. Sending you, and everyone else who needs one, a warm hug! Every bit of resistance, help, and support we can give one another is a positive.
ReplyDeleteICE is making the rounds.
ReplyDeleteIn MA schools are not providing access to ICE. Local police are not assisting ICE.
2 ways to remove dictators:
1. Vote them out.
2. Mass nonviolent noncooperation by the people.
Resistance in any way is going to be helpful.
Fighting for democracy, liberty and justice is key.
Hear! Hear!
DeleteI join you in sobs and fury. I can't believe this is happening.
ReplyDeleteIt is already beyond comprehension. As Ellen says- it is about cruelty.
ReplyDeleteFrom Jim Crow to the atrocities occurring today, the country has failed time and again to live up to its promise. What is happening now is almost beyond belief. Except that we were told it would happen. You have my deepest sympathy, Joanne, as you are forced to watch this inhumane tragedy unfold. It cannot be easy.
ReplyDeleteThis isn’t really the point, I know, but I looked it up and Akron’s county Summit (right?) went strongly for Harris:
ReplyDeleteSummit (56.8% blue to 43.2%).
I expect ice knows this.
DeleteWe are horrified, too, Joanne.
ReplyDeleteSo sad, terrorizing little children. My default position is action, but I can't fix how those kids must feel.
ReplyDeleteThank you for these words, Joanne. You express so well what all of us here are thinking. I am glad that schools are refusing entry. It's a disgusting and cruel group that has taken over.
ReplyDeleteHi Joanne.
ReplyDeleteI know how you feel, I think.
I saw this coming awhile back, but everyone said 'oh no, we'll win', 'you're exaggerating', 'we'll defeat him'...on and on.
The democratic party has lost it's way, and has no visible leader at this point. When they figure out why they lost the working class, and why their candidates have not been able to win except in some few instances, perhaps we'll be back.
In the meantime, we have to rely on the few in Congress who will step up, and defy trump. And on the legal system, which trump has decided to ignore. If he is successful, and he can do whatever he wants, well...
I hope the best for our country.
It's another awful ripple-effect of having that person in the WH (again). Thinking of you and hoping you are well, despite so many things.x
ReplyDeleteOh Joanne! I am with you, crying as I read this. There are no words…
ReplyDeleteThere was a scholarship program for kids in Myanmar, the Lincoln scholarship I believe. Unfortunately, it mentioned that the kids come from diverse backgrounds. Kiss of death, cancelled. We just made more space for China to wield influence. Way to go. ICE officers really are thugs.
ReplyDeleteMembers of the Navajo Nation have been held and questioned by ICE and only released when they can show their birthright papers. They are the indigenous people of this country and they are being treated in this fashion! I would ponder if ICE might come after me because my maternal grandmother came to the U.S. at age 12, but no. We know nothing will happen to me, and we know why nothing will happen to me. I am Caucasian. I am as white as white can be. No one will ever question my right to be in this country. No one will say a word about Elon or Melania. White, white, white! If ICE officers don't stand up and refuse to do his dirty work, if everyone doesn't stand up and refuse to do his dirty work, all the ugliness will continue as he wishes.

ReplyDeleteIt's simply horrifying... the endless cycle... YAM xx
