Hello again

I feel it's been a month since I last posted, but it's only been three or four days. My brain and shoulders continue to sag under the sadness of killing of American school children. I am so helpless. I can only envoke my grandmother's call to action, "Pull up your corset strings girls, we have work to do". Vote. Get out the vote. It's become my mantra, my plea to the universe, Vote. Vote the principles of Lincoln, whether you are a Republican or a Democrat or an Independent. Persuade, Encourage, Influence. Liberty. Equality. Vote.

Something I have not done for months and months is binge watch television. I only have Netflix and several other channels, and for the last two weeks I have closed out Call the Midwife, Emily in Paris, and several other series. Flicking through the offerings, I came again on Downton Abbey, and started again with season one. I went along for several days, weaving a bit and the television.

Eventually I noticed a tiny disclaimer in the information lines that Downton Abbey was available to watch through May 31, at midnight. WTF. If I'd realized sooner, I would have prioritized my selections. I binged all day yesterday; I would watch until it went off the air at midnight last night! We got through World War I, and I glanced at the clock. It was 12:30 a.m. It was a gotcha moment; I'm locked on and will have this to watch to the end!

Then the realization, Netflix probably is a west coast company, and midnight still was three hours, as the world turned. I went to bed at once, so far beyond my bed time that two naps were required this morning.

Good news; I am totally packed for the show on Saturday. My last chore is to liberate some folding money tomorrow. The weather will be lovely. I reminded Beth of the list of what she must bring. She said the tablecloths were back from the laundry, and dazzling.

I am weaving grass green, but it won't be ready for the show. K wandered by the loom last week and remarked on the color, agreeing it's name is spot on. K is from Texas, where grass is yellowish. She says her Ohio yard exceeds any Texas yard she had.

Sunday Caroline, my last grandchild graduates high school. The ceremony is at Severance Hall in Cleveland, the home of the Cleveland Orchestra. It's a huge hall; I have not been there since I was an undergraduate at Case Western Reserve.

I was so happy to be invited, but had to confess, I could not walk from anywhere to my seat. I asked if someone would push my wheelchair. Beth called today with the plan. I will go to Ruth's house, with my wheel chair and France will drive my car, Ruth and me to Severance. Then, push the wheelchair to where Beth and Bill were saving seats. I neglected to ask if his new girlfriend would be with us. We'll see.

  3. Good work Beth! I'm glad you will be able to attend the high school graduation. The green you are weaving looks great. Being fully prepared for the upcoming show must feel very good.

  7. It's difficult to get the Uvalde children off one's mind... and maybe we shouldn't.
As for binging, we have closed out so many good series... and yes, sometimes we just start them over. Rosamunde Pilcher has some of her books (The Shell Seekers and Four Seasons) streaming on Apple as series. You might check those out. And I too love that grass green!

  8. It's so frustrating when Netflix ends a series before you are done! In many areas you can get Downton Abbey on the local PBS station. How exciting that you will be able to attend Caroline's graduation ceremony. I wish you well for the show on Saturday. I know your towels are always a big hit!

  9. I'm glad you'll be able to go to Caroline's grad. That's a very pretty shade of green for the current towels.

  11. Whenever you don't post for a time, I worry and fret. I do not apologize for that nor do I think that you should apologize for not posting for a few days. You have a life! And it's obviously a busy one. I can't wait to hear how Saturday's show goes. May you sell many, many towels, making many, many people happy. And the graduation ceremony- wow! That's pretty huge, lady. Your last grandchild to graduate high school. I feel almost certain that I will not be around when Levon graduates. If I am, I surely hope that someone will help me get to the ceremony.

    1. When Levon graduates, you will be as old as I am now. You have five grands (vs. my six), so there will be plenty to push you around. Literally.

  12. Severance Hall what an exquisite place for a graduation. The towels are beautiful. I will be ordering more again soon so don't sell them all. It will be a wonderful weekend.

  13. I had to look it up:What are students at Case Western like?
They are mostly helpful and very knowledgeable. The students at Case are intelligent and driven while still being unique, diverse, and fun. More nerdy than cool. Most of the students here are insanely intelligent; many are brilliant or genius-level (though some got in based on grades alone). Congratulations . I reckoned that you are a genius!

    1. My older daughter graduated CWRU, too. She meets all those descriptors more than I did, though I wasn't a slouch.

  15. We re-watch a lot of series. It works for our mysteries because there are so many, and the plots are often so intricate, that we can’t remember it all. However, we couldn’t re-watch Downton. Maybe it was too clear in our memories. Perhaps, we’ll feel differently in time.

  16. The end of an era! You're lucky to attend a grand child's high school graduation.

  17. When the pandemic started, we bought a rowing machine. Nothing in this world is as boring as that. I re-watched all of Downton Abbey on Amazon Prime on the rowing machine, it lasted quite awhile. How is France doing these days? I really enjoyed his blog about riding through Viet Nam.

  20. Enjoy the graduation ceremony, Joanne. It will be a welcome antidote to the sadness of Uvalde.

  21. So you’ll be out most of Saturday as well as most of Sunday…..I see a ‘do not disturb’ sign on your door all day Monday while you recover.
Enjoy both your days and I must say the grass green has to be one of the nicest colours you’ve used recently.

  22. Wow. The last grandchild graduating from high school. Mine are all officially adults now, as in 21 or over.
The shootings just keep on keeping on. Been four or five more since, maybe more than that. While the deaths in Uvalde are horrible we have forgotten the 17 kids who were wounded, their bodies torn up as well. And McConnell giving lip service to gun control, OKs some negotiations that they will all vote against anyway.

  23. That will be wonderful to be part of such a special occasion! I feel the same as you--even a few days away from posting makes me feel like I have nothing to say and can't possibly cover that time. (which is usually mundane and boring anyway!)

  24. Wishing you a good show on Saturday..you work so hard!

  25. Good luck and fortune at your show on Saturday, Joanne. The senseless gun violence is weighing on me heavily as well and I really hope the public has had enough and does vote to make a difference. We the people can be a pretty powerful concept.

  28. The news is emotionally draining these days.

  29. And three people were killed in a shooting in Philadelphia on Saturday night, involving several assailants. When will common sense prevail and gun ownership be tightened up?

I'm not a binge watcher. I like to spend a few days looking forward to the next episode. It's more exciting.
