And another thing...

I'm still on Facebook and Instagram. I tried to make a Bluesky account, but messed it up so completely I can no longer access it. Maybe I'll straighten that out some day. We all seem to hang out on Facebook and Instagram. So what the heck.

Except of course, all those ads, across several platforms, just because I looked up something. Or bought something. I bought a new bra recently and everywhere I go now, an ad for that bra that I already bought.

Recently a gratuitous clip from Jon Stewart popped up, featuring John Oliver on data mining and an address for his site about social media regulation. The website is How to change your Meta settings.

I do not find programs "intuitive". I have wasted near an hour trying to figure out screen shots, but that obviously needs to be done on my own time. I can make links, so there you go. It tells you how to stop Meta from feeding ads based on data collection, how to stop Meta from using data to help advertisers target you on other apps and how to unlink your account from your data that other companies give to Meta.

So, that's my public service announcement for today. The YouTubers call them PSA's and a popular one going around now is called "I was today years old when I learned!" and goes on to tell us something we learned fifty or sixty years ago. However, my daughter sent me one recently and it was new.

She collects old prescription bottles and sends them to a charity that provides them to hospitals in Africa, where prescription bottles are hard to come by. However, the labels must come off first. That's a job I hate, so I pass mine along to her, label intact. Here's what she learned:

Put the bottle in the freezer. I forget how long; let's say overnight. Next day, roll your finger or thumb over one corner to lift the edge, then pull off the label, easy peazy, as they say.

Since I will be putting some time into learning screen shots, I think I'll tackle another housekeeping job. Sort of like getting the genealogy in order for the children (I've done that.). When searching for the pictures I used to take of my knitting projects I found most of them are only printed on the instructions I used to write up. The original pictures are on thumb drives stashed in a basket. My kids can go through them if they want, like I went through all those census records.

The problem with the instruction sheets I made, they are in long defunct programs like WordStar or Publisher. I'd like to convert them to something accessible now. There are patterns for sweaters (mostly children's), mittens, gloves, hats, ponchos. Imagine a pair of gloves in two afternoons. If I do this, anyone interested? I'll put them in a post.

  1. Well I can certainly relate to much of this post. I walked away from Facebook in 2017 (couldn't bear to watch family members & former classmates sing Trumps praises) and I never went back. Never did the Instagram thing, blogging is my only social platform now. But I know the people at Google are watching me, I visit youtube and get all sorts of recommendations for stuff supposedly geared for me--and while I'm at it, I find the AI responses (when I do a google search) to be annoying, never helpful. Okay, sorry for my long ramble here :^)

  2. I like the idea of modifying Facebook and will try to figure it out. I'm not very good at tech these days. Or it's evolved beyond me?

  3. Such a great idea with the prescription bottles. We just recycle ours. The labels come off without too much trouble.

  4. I would love a pattern for that hat. And I am going to see if I can navigate through those how-to-change-your-settings instructions. Do you think they really work? I am so distrustful these days. Okay. I just looked it up and it seems legit. I am definitely going to work on this tomorrow. And you have also inspired me to try and start researching our family's genealogy. I've been wanting to do this. Perhaps now is the time.
    Thank

    1. Thank you, Joanne! Random finger slip hit Publish before I was ready.

  5. I've never used a Z product, including Fb, Threads, Ig. Never been near them. I'm active on Spoutible, a secure platform where your info is protected, trolls are bounced fast and the tos are reasonable. No algorithm either.
Not going to bluesky, founded by the former owner of Twitter.

Good for you for getting things in order, including patterns that could be lost.

  6. I do not use Facebook and have not for many years.
I do not like all the tracking going on. It is intrusive. Big brother is watching.
Businesses sell our phone numbers and email addresses. I get calls from all over the world. When the call comes up on my caller id, I ignore it. I also get tons of emails either selling something or alerting me of a fake emergency (scam). All this stuff gets deleted.
Even my iPhone tracks me. No matter where I go when I use my iPhone it alerts me: You are in xxx location (names the town and state).
I guess the onus is on us to do what we can to block this stuff.

  7. I don’t knit but I’m sure your patterns should be rescued to be shared with the world.
Is Ravelry still the go-to site for knitting?

I’m off FB but it is a fabulous way to share and connect. Too bad about the downside…
Do you have an ad blocker installed? I use the free Adblock. They help a lot.

  8. Publisher is obsolete? Gosh, I used that all the time at my job.

  9. Pixelfed is an Instagram equivalent.
Bluesky is really a substitute for Twitter, but private messages apparently aren't completely safe yet.
So we are stuck with Meta for now.
    Busy blocking all the rubbish.

  10. I was today years old when I learned how to get labels off prescription bottles!

Like Fresca, I use Adblock, which cancels out most of the junk stuff for general online work. I am not on most socials - but use Instagram due to it being the only place to be in touch with several folk... I only use it on the laptop (not phone) and find that I can opt out of adds on a monthly basis - which I don't think is available on the phone version. Good luck learning the screenprint (it's pretty easy - but you have to get to that 'got it! point...) YAM xx

  12. uBlock Origin is an add-on for Firefox. It works, no ads make it through.

  13. Best way to block ads on
fb and instagram is to get off of Facebook and Instagram...I do have an ad blocker and it does work well. Comes in handy while watching you tube videos or movies or clips!, no interruptions. I wish i could knit, I did try but trying is not achieving, is it. My loss. You are the fabric/wool/weaving/knitting queen, I would love to have even a fraction of your knowledge!

  14. I'm sure there would be some interest in the knitting patterns, but not from me. I can barely knit three rows before my fingers cramp, so I've given that up altogether.
I have never been on Facebook or Instagram so I don't have to worry about deleting any accounts.

  15. Dear Joanne, thank you for the link "How to change your Meta settings". I think I need it! My working with the computer is a sort of "muddling through" - I reach my aim, yes, I am not daft - the core is: I am not really interested in it - it is a tool to get something else. Connection with dear&vivid people as you.

  16. Wow, you're seriously into all this technology. I'm on Facebook to keep in touch with a few friends and that's it. Everything else seems irrelevant. I've never been on Twitter, Instagram, Tiktok or any of these other things.

  17. Joanne, I was going to exit Facebook also and join Bluesky... and may still do so, but at the moment Facebook is my only connection to pictures of family and friends in Louisiana. And Facebook and blogging are my only online social media. As for the removal of labels, I've known and used the freezer method on candle jars. It works.

  18. We used to go through great gyrations to peel those labels, but one day Sue discovered that she could peel them off. We don't have to freeze ours first, but they may be different than yours.

  19. When I read stuff like this I am eternally glad that I am not on any social media but my blog.

  20. Would you mind posting that address for the charity that takes prescription bottles?

  21. I'm on Bluesky and Threads. It's where I get most my news since legacy media is completely cowed. Still have my FB account but only use it to share info about what Trump/Musk/fucking republicans are up to and post a link to my blog.
I'll start saving my empty pill bottles.

  22. I learned a bit from you today. Thank you.

  23. I'll save empty pill bottles, too, if you give the info, Joanne. I would love to learn how to knit more - I've only made scarves and dish cloths and I'm not very good at those!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I would love to donate pill bottles! We have so many between the two of us and I hate waste! My old blog is now dormant, thanks to my ex-daughter-in-law. She won't be able to find my new one: hotdiggitydog4@blogspot.com. I posted for first time today, come see me!

  25. Thanks for the tip on prescription bottles, Joanne. We have quite a few at the end of the month and would love to give them to a good cause.

  26. I've been doing a little knitting again recently and would enjoy the hat pattern if you're able to resurrect it. It's a constant struggle to save information when the formats change over and over.

  27. That idea for getting off sticky labels is a good one and worth a try. I have almost stopped using Facebook. A mental switch clicked in my mind saying it's only necessary to keep up with friends and I don't need to follow any of the links or look at any of the ads.

  28. Bluesky was tricky for me to join as well. Finally got there in the end. Hope you are well, Joanne! x

  29. I don’t have any prescription bottles (yet!) but I’m always trying to remove sticky labels from little jars for making jam and marmalade. I’ve tried many methods seen on the internet, but there are some really stubborn ones. When I get the chance, I’ll try the freezing idea.
