I saw this in the paper birch tree at the town hall.
It probably is a hummingbird nest.
My camera extends from 4 to 180 mm.

Without extending the lens, the nest seems like some debris caught in the branches.
Hummingbirds generally do not reuse nests, but recycle them.

The windows behind are in a room that is locked unless rented for an event,
but I'll try and keep an eye on the nest from the lower level, where I am. Until it disappears into the leaves.

The only time I saw a hummer's nest was at a friend's house. We could look down from her window and see a tiny, tiny nest and tiny, tiny eggs in it. It was about the size of a halved plum!

ReplyDeleteI have wondered about hummingbirds' nests. I have some that hum outside my window in the summer, and I have trouble picturing them actually staying still long enough to inhabit a nest.
ReplyDeleteI have a few hummer nests and they are so little. Didn't know they didn't reuse them. They attach lichens all around the nest. Perhaps for camouflage. Very pretty.
ReplyDeleteHummingbird nest -- what a find. I know that the nests are quite small. Hummingbirds go gaga over hanging plants that have red blossoms. I find them fun to watch as they dart through the air. -- barbara
ReplyDeleteI saw a hummingbird for only the 2nd time in all my years. I was very excited as it sat on the top of the bushes in my garden. It was a perfect spot and in profile I spotted it. Sad to say I couldn't get a photo though. Happy viewing. Perhaps you will see some hummingbirds too.

ReplyDeletea similar one of a long tailed tit. Of course we only see them when the trees are bare. And I think, like you, they are only used once - unlike rooks, who just tidy up their nests each year and then re-use them.
I hope you get to see baby birds in there eventually.
