Beth and I made plans to get together today and let the
cousins visit. That was cancelled this morning, when Laura’s cough (from
yelling so much at the dance, Grandma) turned into a barking cough. The last
barking cough was a sinus infection, but this one seems to be bouncing from
lung to lung, so we’ll see. I do know if I felt like she sounded I’d be in bed,
not reading a book.
Last night, when the bark was an occasional throat clearing,
my plan for today was a stop at the drug store for some cough syrup for Laura
and a beautiful razor for Caroline, on my way to visit. But Laura went with Jan
and Emily, to the bank and the drug store, and after an earful of that cough, I
could only call Beth and cancel.
Emily needed the trip to the bank to open her first checking
account. This was on the “to do” list
for fall, but her current job preempted the requirement by refusing to deposit
her paychecks into her savings account. The reason given; the bank’s
handwritten savings account and routing numbers could be entered incorrectly by
the payroll department. Emily is working for the school, after school,
maintaining computers. And, that’s enough about that bit of illogical thinking.
Why does Caroline need a razor? Beth mentioned a trip to the
drug store might be in her plans today, too, if she needed something for
Caroline’s rash. “What rash,” asked Grandma. “From shaving with her father’s
razor,” snapped my daughter.
I laughed.
“Why haven’t you bought her a razor,” I got out between lingering
chuckles.
“Why hasn’t she told me she wants one,” came the irritable answer.
“Do daughters do that? I don’t recall you asking me; my
razors just disappeared!”
Well, she supposed so.” Then, “Did you give Emily and Laura
razors?”
“Long ago. It seems I should get one for Caroline, too.”
Perhaps next week.
I think we all have stories of getting into the razors maybe a bit earlier than our parents might have wanted to or using someone else's shaver in the family. Wise for you to realize it was time for Caroline to have her own :) I hope Laura feels better soon; sounds like a nasty cough!

Seesawing from coughing children who need to be watched over to young women who need razors. These are the schizophrenic years.

ReplyDeleteOh my, what a perceptive person you are. I hope you can get a beautiful razor to her soon. And that Laura's cough lets go (and disappears as quickly as an "ill-gotten" razor can).
ReplyDeleteHa ha, it reminds me that I never asked anyone to use their razors either. I just used them and didn't even clean them. That's how unthinking young girls can be and you are quite right to note that young girls need a razor when they show signs of needing one not when they have asked for one. I do hope Laura can get over her bad cough soon.
ReplyDeleteMy dad had a Gillette razor (wonder whatever happened to it?)... with double edged blades by the time I was old enough to want to use it. I'm just glad he no longer used that straight edge that he sharpened with that strop... I'd probably have scars now. You are one wonderful Grandmoher!
ReplyDeleteDoing that same coughing thing at my house. And I'm exhausted from it! I hear there are bad bugs going around all over the country!! Good luck to her and to finding the perfect razor!!
ReplyDeleteSpeedy healing to Laura, and yay for adults who recognize what kids need and when they need it.
ReplyDeleteEchoing jenny_o. I never asked for a razor either. And neither was one provided.
ReplyDeleteThose coughs take a long time to go away. I hope you bought the big bottle of cough syrup.
ReplyDeleteI'm not fussy I will use what I find in my bathroom if I want to scrap some hair off my legs we always have disposables for any one who wants one. The beer fairy buys them and they all go, he did grow a beard at one stage and we ran out .
ReplyDeleteHope Laura is feeling better soon.
Merle..........
Thank you for this foray into your life. Chuckling.
ReplyDeleteI hope Laura is feeling better. And I hope Carline's new razor will ease her discomfort.
ReplyDeleteI don't remember if my girls used my razor, maybe they just bought their own when they needed them. I do remember my youngest using my razor to shave his head, so I bought him a hair trimmer for Christmas that year.
ReplyDeleteHow I wish we had redwinged blackbirds at our feeder. Never heard of them before but they sound so exotic.

ReplyDeleteOOohhhhh that brought back memories!!! .... hope that cough resolves... YAM xx
Thanks God - I thought she treated rashes by shaving them off for a minute.
ReplyDeleteHope that cough goes away pdq.
ReplyDeleteLuckily, I use them less and less nowadays. They have become terribly expensive.
ReplyDeleteI hope her cough gets away and she will be better soon!
ReplyDeleteAh, razor burn, remember it well. Tis the season of barking coughs, hope she gets well soon.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to think of how I procured my first razor.
ReplyDeleteHope her cough gets better soon!
Here, there's been quite a lot in the news about women getting charged much more than men for what are basically the same things, except differently themed. I found myself wondering if the pink razor you showed, costs more than a more obviously "manly" one! :)
ReplyDeleteSeven or eight dollars. Way more. It does have a lotion filled pad on each side of the blades About six dollars worth, it seems.

ReplyDeleteOh, my goodness. Gone are the days when I needed a razor.
ReplyDeleteI got tired of nicking my boney self and was also pissed that men didn't need to shave to be considered attractive and threw my razors away somewhere around 19 or 20. have been proudly hairy ever since. of course, now, age has taken care of most of that for me.
ReplyDeleteI remember nicking, for sure. When I remodelled the bathroom I made sure there was a nice little seat in the corner for my granddaughters to sit on to shave their legs. I was tired of looking at little bloody spots on their jean's legs.
DeleteHa! That is a funny story. :-))
ReplyDeleteThis shaving legs business is serious business. Hope all is well at your house.
