Winter weather warning

There has been no serious winter weather to date. That is about to change for us, and much of the country, This is winter storm Elliot. The weather channel warns it may become a bomb cyclone. As for me, I've  no experience with this sort of storm, and would like at least a quick peek.

Here at the control center we are enjoying what we know of this unusual event. The banks are saying don't rely on them to be  open. They suggest falling back on our phone apps in the event of an extraordinary storm.

On a brighter note, this morning's exercise class was yoga and tomorrow's is seated exercise. I like the yoga class very much and generally must wake myself at the end. A good thing. I've dropped the Wednesday exercise class. The workout is too hard and leaves me in pain, which I don't need.

I have been at work in the studio, too, these past two weeks. I finished the blue, Blue Cobalt, and have it all cut and made into towels.

Now I am working on a totally new to me color, Charcoal. I'm a way off from finished towels, but here is a picture of a couple of bobbins of finished thread:

As you can see, it is not black. Black is too flat and shiny. You could ask Jan to make a swatch of charcoal to have a sample to look down on. It is an excellent color to work with and I am anxious to weave some more auxiliary colors that will be complementary.

  1. The arctic blast is not fooling around and you will get nailed so the weather guy says , he is an accurate and smart meteorologist that I trust- Don day,
Wyoming. With the wind chill factor parts of
Wyoming will get to 70 below! I have lived there when it was 50 below and thought that surely we would die so 70 below is surreal!~ I finally parted with three of your towels- gifts- reluctantly...

  2. I believe your area will be getting walloped. At least you don't have to go out, or shovel, or any of that. The charcoal is a really nice color. I like that.

I too like that charcoal shading... though all the other colours will, I am sure, help to fight the dark and dreary that the weather is apparently going to dump on you! I am glad you are in a place where you will be looked after and are safe and people about. Stay warm! YAM xx

  8. Sounds like you moved house at the right time. You’ll be warm and dry and fed as well as safe if that storm comes a calling.
I tend to think of charcoal as a bluey/grey colour not dark as black but slightly darker than most greys.
Merry Christmas to you and your family Joanne. You timed your family dinner gathering just right as well.

  9. Wise decision to move when you did, I'd say. The new color is very sophisticated, lovely, and will go in a lot of kitchens. I like your attitude to yoga!

  10. I love the cobalt towels, Joanne. You are tempting me again... I have pumpkin, aqua, and blue already. So I will hold off for now. But they are really pretty. As for the weather, stay home and stay warm. With any luck, it will only be for 2-3 days.

  11. We are already in the beginning of this bad weather. According to the weatherman we are in for at least 5 or 6 days of this before it warms a bit. Stay safe.

  12. I think that big storm is going to hit Eastern Canada too, but we won't get it in Western Canada. All we have is Arctic cold right now (-30, -40)

  13. A bomb cyclone? I've never heard of such a thing, I shall have to google. Please stay as safe and warm as you can. The piles of towels look lovely.

  14. Like River I am going to have to explore bomb cyclone. I really, really like your new towel colour. And hooray for giving up classes that cause you pain.

  15. We too are awaiting a major storm, Joanne. It is supposed to descend on us tomorrow and carry through the weekend. We had planned to visit Miriam's daughter on Saturday, but those plans will have to be delayed. All the best for Christmas and the New Year - David

  16. The CNN weather person says: The storm is expected to become a “bomb cyclone” Thursday evening into Friday. A bomb cyclone is when a storm rapidly intensifies – and drops 24 millibars (a term used to measure atmospheric pressure) in 24 hours.

The storm is expected to reach the pressure equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane as it reaches the Great Lakes, with the weather service describing the strength of the low a “once-in-a-generation” event.

I am 50 miles north of Cincinnati and the local weather person just said that the temp might reach a high of 44 here today but suddenly drop to zero degrees by 7PM. He said if it does that will be historic. A sudden drop like that sets off high winds and blizzard conditions. Since we will have rain just before the temps drop the wet will turn to ice quickly and the snow that follows wills blow with the hurricane type winds making poor visiblity and power outtages likely. We are in for a bumpy ride the next couple of days.
Happy Christmas Joanne and to all your loyal commenters and bloggy friends.

  17. I have heard about this bomb cyclone today on our news. They say it could be as low as -50C in the Mid West. That is seriously cold!

  18. With that weather forecast it's a good job you moved when you did.

  19. Stay warm! As to the new color, charcoal, it's a winner.

  20. They are calling for it to get quite bad here, although not nearly as bad as there! Take care. This is a good Christmas to stay holed up and let everyone come to you!

  21. I am hoping the snow will be cleared up before Saturday so travelers can get here safely.
Glad you are enjoying your activities there and those towels look terrific!

  22. The weather event sounds pretty horrific with high winds, snow and extreme cold. I hope your apartment complex has generators to keep everything working and comfortable. Massachusetts is to have rain and high wind. Our coastline is preparing for high tides and floods. Power outages are predicted.

  23. I do not understand meteorology at all. How can this entire country be so affected by this...event? A bomb cyclone? We are all busy googling now.
    The charcoal is very nice.
    Please stay warm.

  24. We also have dire weather warnings.

  25. Dire warnings here too. Looks like North America will be hit hard!

  26. I like the blue cobalt very much. I'm afraid of this storm because when we have such harsh weather, we always have more accidents and deaths from snow-shoveling-related heart attacks and even people who die from hypothermia. Here in Northeast Florida we expect some very cold temperatures. On Dec. 24 we have a freeze watch from midnight to 10 a.m. with temps in the 20s. Our houses are not built for cold. I'm sure you are quite safe where you are. I'm glad you like the yoga.

    Love,
    Janie

  27. The charcoal is a lovely color. If you stick with yoga and seated exercise it may strengthen your body to tackle the hard stuff!

  28. Stay safe and warm, Joanne. I saw that my favorite football team is going to play in -19 degree weather if everything plays out as predicted. Today was the worse for us as it got down to 8 but it is warming up after that. Take care.

  29. Stay warm and well during this winter storm that's coming! We're going to have bitterly cold temperatures, too. Your towels are always lovely.

    Merry Christmas!

  30. Just seen some TV reports from the USA...why oh why do they go out in it, despite all the weather warnings and advice not to??

  31. I can't imagine being up there during this as down here is horrible enough. I am so glad you are where you are now. I like the charcoal.

  32. We in Illinois are in the midst of Elliot, and what a doozy he has been! Currently it is 1 degree with a minus one wind chill. Friend of ours had pipes burst in her home, what an unholy mess! LOVE the charcoal color, it really is quite elegant. Stay warm and safe Joanne, and have a Merry Christmas!

  33. I love the new colors, charcoal and blue. Sounds like you are keeping well, enjoying a quiet winter.

  34. I think your blue towels are my favorites. Stay warm. It reached 55 here today, and next week rain is predicted each day. We welcome it here in the western USA since we are in a long drought period.
