I like listening to the gossip of the old timers who have been here since Hector was a pup. There have been significant changes in their time, and many of those changes recent. I've mentioned we have five meals a week served in the common dining room and two served in disposable dishes in our rooms.
This change happened during the Covid interval, and I've heard plenty of chatter about how sad and difficult those couple of years were. Since the return to more "normal" times the facilities have faced the same problems as everyone else, the lack of hired help, especially kitchen staff and servers.
Dinner in the dining room is served cafeteria style, from large, heated, domed servers. The food during the week is very good. The selection is one kind of vegetable, usually a couple of starch, potato selections, usually up to three meats. From this week I can remember pecan crusted salmon, rolled pork roast stuffed with something, rolled beef slices, various casseroles. Moving on to desserts, which run the gamut. Then excellent ice cream. We can take as much as we we want to our rooms, as prepared meals are not served at lunch time. There is a refrigerator and freezer for storage, plenty of cupboards and a stove.
There are games, activities, movies, yoga, exercises, bingo, the library, the pool, and more. If we drive, our car in on site. The bus can be reserved once a week to go to the grocery and drug store and small town attractions.
I have no idea what others do with the rest of their time. Personally I am four bobbins from clearing off the rest of the orange warp from the loom. The next warp will be some variety of red.
There are a couple of small metro parks here in Portage County that I must investigate for potential. I confess, first I must learn my way around the county better. I did sort out my County ballot and fill it out. A couple of judges did declare their political affiliation, a couple did not, and one was a proud Republican, on Google, but not on the ballot. Those I proudly left blank.
An atrium on my way to dinner. The foliage is getting thin and sparse.
I am fascinated to learn more about your new abode. Your meals sound pretty good, and hopefully you will start to put back some of the weight that has fallen off your frame. Well done on negotiating the ballot paper.

ReplyDeleteI am so glad to read that you are appreciating the food offerings; tasty and nutritious means a lot! There is a definite feel in the post that you are properly getting your bearings in this different lifestyle. Well done on the weaving! YAM xx
Sounds like a good place to live with some options that would be attractive.
ReplyDeleteLooks like winter coming on early in that Atrium. As for the ballot, I did the same as you. If they noted their party affiliation, I voted Democrat. I'm not going to vote Republican until they get their act together. Taking Medicare and Social Security away or using it as a leverage to get their way only hurts people--the same people who put them in office! Not gonna happen if I have anything to say about it.
ReplyDeleteJust noticed your RBG t-shirts. One of her long-time friends has written a book about their friendship. https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Dinners-with-Ruth/Nina-Totenberg/9781982188085
DeleteTotenberg was a guest on Steven Colbert's show last night. I was impressed with her and actually thought she looked a lot like Bette Midler. Have put the book on my 'need to read' list.
It sounds as if your menus are good, and it's important to keep up your weight. Easier when food's readily available and appetizing. There seems to be a lot of activity choices.
ReplyDeleteThe food sounds very good and plentiful. That would be an important thing for me. Kepp on weavin’! - Jenn
ReplyDeleteI am just now appreciating the red towel I have from your wonderful self. It is festive and I only use it for clean things, I will not let anyone use it, same is true of the gold ones and the green one and the white one and especially the yellow ones. They were meant to be gifts but i kept them all, they are my favorites, If the house is burning i will grab those before baby pictures!!
ReplyDeleteYour new digs sound do-able. At least you will not be required to shovel snow, right?
I am sure that your loom anchors you to reality, Joanne. It is the constant in your life that keeps on ticking.
ReplyDeleteLots of interaction if you want it and the food sounds good. Your loom is weaving you through life there too!
ReplyDeleteI have to say that the food sounds pretty good. I hope you've got your table mates sorted. Is only dinner/supper served? You mentioned no lunch, how about breakfast?
ReplyDeleteGlad the food is good! That's important!
ReplyDeleteIn my experience municipal elections here do not invoke party affiliation. I think I like it that way. Provincial and federal are different stories, however.
ReplyDeleteI believe the 3 towels I ordered the other day are sitting in our office, ready for me to pick up tomorrow! I hope so ... I am anxious to see and feel them!
ReplyDeleteYour residence does sound very nice ... having someone else doing most of the cooking ... that would be a treat for sure ... however, I know you do pay for that luxury!
Have a peaceful Sunday!
And are you content and happy? It sounds very nice there and of course, just not having to worry about meals and nutrition has got to be a huge relief. Is there anyone that you feel you could truly be friends with?
ReplyDeleteNot yet. But. I don't know everyone yet.
DeleteMy hero!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIf you want to read something horrifyingly hilarious, read about the Reawaken America ralley in Manheim PA. These people are nuts. There is no other word for it. Mastriano was there, the republican hopeful for PA Governor. Neither my husband or I can envision ourselves ever voting republican in our lifetime. We think it will take that long for the nuts to die off.
Isn't it lovely to have meal prep taken off your self-care? And they sound really really good. And very flexible in that you can take some back to your apartment. Good on you on voting too, a hugely important election. I just wish the Dems were picking Repugs' points apart. But then again the obscene amount of dollars funding the Rs are driving many voters. Fingers crossed.

So did you get your change of dinner companions? Sounds like you are happy to be there. So much to do and people to be around and, best of all, meals done for you. So convenient.
ReplyDeleteYour restaurant quality meals sound outstanding. Can you invite a guest? You are independent and sharp; everything else will come together nicely.
ReplyDeleteRe: County ballot--I, too, would have gone for the (proudly) blank option. :)
ReplyDeleteThe meals sound very tasty. I haven't had the pleasure of eating homemade ice-cream in sooo very long.
The food sounds great and varied. I am lazy so I eat too many of the same things over and over again. I don't see myself ever voting Republican again; they've become so extreme and scary. Wacky too!
ReplyDeleteThat all sounds very satisfactory, especially all the food choices. The lack of hired help is a big problem in the UK also, partly because after Brexit a lot of foreign nationals left the country or returned to their home country.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds good, Joanne! The food sounds very good, the activities they offer too - and to find out about the County that is surrounding you is the right intention to find people who please you.
ReplyDeleteYou are getting comfortably settled. I too have voted. It always feels good.
ReplyDeleteWell, the meals sound good....wish someo# ne would cook for me!
ReplyDeleteAppears you are settling in well.
ReplyDeleteI like the sound of where you live. It is sad but so very many places don't have enough help these days.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! You're making me want to move in where you live. That sounds wonderful.
