More captioned pictures


Saturday is grocery and errands day. The wreath we got yesterday. I hope for a nuthatch to be by, looking for pine nuts.


This house last had pumpkins on display. Now it's Christmas greens and candy canes. The trip to the store entailed an interesting conversation:


Laura: What would you like for a vegetable this week?
Me: How about chard, for a change.
Laura: What's that?
Me: Steam it like spinach, big plop of butter, heaven.
Laura: I'll see.

Me: Would you ever consider a pot roast? You probably could get a pound or so roast.
Laura: Then what?
Me: Brown it, put it in the pot, carrots, potatoes, onion.
Laura: Brown it?
Me: I'll show you.
Laura: Would the slow cooker work?


There it is, right beside the coffee. I don't use Maxwell House; My fingers cannot pry the lid off the can. It must have been on sale. Not a problem; I'll dump it into the Folger's can. Their engineers made a lid I can use.

New shoes. I think I should give in and buy "short" jeans. It's difficult to stop being 5'6".


Today feels happy. The news isn't the worst I've ever read. I feel like knitting on the year old sweater and watching Harry Potter with Laura. I wish a good and happy weekend to everyone else, too.

  3. Have a relaxing weekend! I've had to get used to being less than 5'2". You can do it!
    OTH, most cropped pants work for me without hemming! Roasting. Some of the easiest cooking. I do it often.

There are roughly a million (pretty sure that's the amount) recipes on Pinterest (or other places on the internet) where Laura could find a recipe for a roast in the crockpot, but you're right, it really should be seared on the outside first. Haven't watched Harry Potter for a long time. I wanted to style our livingroom after the Gryffindor common room. Have a happy weekend. -Jenn

    1. Laura's cookbook is Pinterest. She isn't angry about my suggestions; she simply ignores them. It is amusing, and cooking is her brave new world.

  7. I am so very glad that today feels happy. And hope that the meter gets stuck there.
    As a long legged beastie I would love to have trousers which were too long instead of those which display all of my ankles.

    good days are to be grasped and treasured; To me, you are a giant. No, really. I's under the fiver. One of my mother's favourite things to cook was a pot roast. I think Laura will love it. YAM xx

  11. My Mom always called it Swiss Chard. She loved a good feed of it every once in awhile -- quicky parboiled with cream and butter. I was never a fan.

    1. I forgot the "Swiss" part. No matter, I am informed there was none, so she got more kale. Kale is punishment chard, but I'm not the cook.

    The crock pot roast sounds wonderful. Now I'm craving.
    We buy our favorite brand of coffee in bags then put it in canning jars in the freezer, grinding beans as needed.

  14. I LOVE potroast and knowing how to cook one will be a skill Laura will treasure. Do you add a splash of worcestershire sauce and a big dollop of tomato sauce to the simmer water as I do? I always cook a bigger one than I need, and shred the meat, then freeze it in ziplock bags for sandwiches, about two sandwiches supply per bag.
    Your wreath is beautiful. I hope you get a nuthatch or two.

  15. Coincidentally, Em and I are watching one of the potter series too, the one with the contest where the Twilight actor dies. We're having a leftover version I bet few have tried: Haxe, with a turkey drumstick instead of a pig shank, with the mashed potatoes and sauerkraut bed.

  17. Tell Laura she can pur the slow cooker on high to brown the roast. Then turn it to medium and add all the vegetables and herbs to cook it until done. It takes no further effort and is a good hot meal whenever you are ready. It is a good meal to put on in the morning when you have a busy day.

  20. I have a great recipe for roast in the crock pot if Laura ever wants it. Let us know if she goes with the chard. I don't think I've ever had it myself.

  22. my husband does the cooking. he does the low temperature slow roasting method for meat, whatever kind. it works well. as for jeans that are too long, it's one reason I used to buy my levis in the men's department...you could select not only by waist size but by length. I finally found a store that has women's jeans in more than long, you know for all those women who wear 4" - 6" heels with their jeans. so on a completely unrelated note...have you ever considered yoga for strength, flexibility, and balance?
