Tuesday last my nice Tonia drove through an intersection on her green light.
The sweet young thing who should have stopped at the red light at her intersection
Was texting.
She turned left in front of Tonia
Tonia's right tibia and fibula are shattered.
You're looking at a lot of rods holding her leg together.
The police cited the sweet young thing.
Her daddy's insurance will pay for Tonia's surgeries and months of rehabilitation.
Not Tonia's daddy--Tonia is an orphan.
We wonder if daddy put sweet young things phone in a vise,
or if she's just texting all her friends, OMG, can you believe what happened.
If you use your phone for any purpose while you drive,
you are a fucking idiot.
I'll remember that next time I look at my phone. I simply cannot drive and mess with my phone at the same time without going all over the road. Poor Tonia. How horrific.

ReplyDeleteOMG this is one thing that totally enrages me too Joanne...... even the so-called 'hands free' thing is one of the evilist inventions. SWITcH THE BLOODY THINGS OFF.... There is absolutely NOTHING in life which requires one to be utilising communications equipment whilst driving - unless you have an offsider and work in an emergency vehicle such as would have been required here.
Am actually anti mobile phones in general; they are a social blight. Even among my best of friends, we cannot have a conversation without the darned things distracting them.
Adding Tonia to my 'healing vibes' file... YAM xx
Never mind The Walking Dead. Our roads are overrun with a larger plague - idiot, oblivious, immature drivers.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry for Tonia.
not just immature drivers.
DeleteSo so sorry for Tonia! And I agree with you about driving and texting. Just turn the blankety blank things off unless you need to make a call ( at the next rest stop!!). Linda@Wetcreek Blog
ReplyDeleteOMG. Let's hope she learned her lesson and rags all her friends if she sees them texting. People can be so stupid and selfish. Your poor niece, that leg will probably pain her the rest of her life. I never go through an intersection on green without checking to make sure cross traffic is stopping. seen it happen, a car zoom forward the instant the light turned green only to get broadsided by the person trying to beat the light.
ReplyDeleteJust makes me shake my head... in disgust.... in anger.... and in sadness. Somehow I doubt if the sweet young thing learned a damned thing.....
ReplyDeleteIt's ironic that a device that makes it easier to phone roadside assistance creates a greater need for it.
ReplyDeleteshe is lucky to be alive! I feel no urge to look at a text on my phone while driving. It will be there when I stop.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry this happened to Tonia! Hopefully her shattered leg will heal nicely. I see so many people who are on their phones while they are driving. I don't know what can be done to stop them! But it needs to be done. Prayers for everyone!
ReplyDeleteThat's awful. Hope your niece recovers soon.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry for Tonia. And enraged.
ReplyDeleteSadly I suspect the young thing would only learn her lesson if SHE was hurt.
Well said. Wishing a speedy recovery to Tonia.
ReplyDeleteThat is bad! Lucky (I guess) to not be killed.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen you use rough language in a post, but I believe your usage today is entirely proper.
No this is NOT funny...poor girl.
ReplyDeleteI'm thankful Tonia didn't suffer more injuries but I am sorry she suffered this. I think your last line summed it up beautifully! We were in an accident about 5 years ago, hit from behind, I'm 100% sure the girl that hit us was texting. I hope she learned her lesson like I hope the girl who hit your niece learns her lesson. I think it could be a costly one.
ReplyDeleteI hope Tonia eventually makes a full recovery.
betty
I'm so sorry for your niece and the long recuperation this injury will create. Such foolish things drivers do. We used to worry about dui, but using a phone is just as bad.
ReplyDeleteHorrible, I hate cell phones, I wish there was some way to make them inoperable in cars.
ReplyDeletePoor, poor Tonia. I hope she recovers well.
ReplyDeleteSweet young things will continue to do stupid things as long as Daddies are there to bail them out.
Jane x
AMEN to your last comment!
ReplyDeleteYou used the right word, Joanne.
ReplyDeleteTonia will be months recovering--I feel for her.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness, Joanne! You have broken through the fence, and I admire you! Excellent word.
I'm so sorry for Tonia...the pain, the shock, the incapacity during rehabilitation....
ReplyDeleteNever mind the insurance...won't the driver at fault be banned?
I don't know what will happen to her, but she is enmeshed in the court system now, and I will keep an eye on the case.
DeleteA few 'sweet young things' need to be publicly sentenced to hard time; perhaps that would slow the cellphone kill and injury rate. Anyone capable of driving and/or texting knows what can result from mixing the two, and has chosen entertainment over another's life and well-being... would we just slap the wrist of someone who chose to play Russian Roulette with their gun to another person's head???
ReplyDeleteI'll be keeping Tonia in my thoughts, and hope she heals quickly and well.
There should be a law against using the phone while in the car especially texting. So very sorry for Tonia.
ReplyDeleteHere in Montreal the police are getting very strict about hand held cell phones and texting while driving. There have been enough accidents and deaths due to this.
ReplyDeleteOh No! I hope Tonia isn't in too much pain, although that injury does look horrendous. I'm glad at least that her recovery is being paid for.
ReplyDeleteSweet young thing should be banned from driving for a while as well as banned from her phone.
Here in Australia using the phone while driving is against the law, there are heavy fines applicable, but still some people continue to do it. shame on all of them.
That's just awful! Poor Tonia! Isn't it against the law to text there? It is here. I hope the sweet young thing got her driver's license taken away for a time.
ReplyDeletePoor Tonia indeed. Here in the UK people do the same. If you can take their car number plate and tell the police when you see anyone on the phone - it is important to say the exact time - there is a possibility that they can be prosecuted. In my view anyone guilty of using a phone while driving should be sent to prison.
ReplyDeleteThat's awful. Simple - driving / phone switched off... we used to be able to manage without phones in cars.
ReplyDeleteOh the poor girl. I am so sorry Joanne.x
ReplyDeleteBroken bones are no laughing matter. Here in Hawaii, it is against the law to hold a device while driving, not even while stopped at a traffic light.
ReplyDeleteSo many people think it is just fine to use their phone because they are "really good at multi-tasking". It is a horror story.
ReplyDeleteThe laws banning this are less effective than the drinking and driving laws. The laws are not the complete solution. People need to comprehend the extreme danger of this. I don't think enough people see the danger. Is there a similar group as MADD for this?
ReplyDeleteTonia is going to need a lot of PT to rehab from this. If you can, make sure she starts it and keeps it up. The amount she can recover mobility and other things will be dependent on rigorous therapy.
ReplyDeleteI know. She lives on the other side of the state from me, with only a brother and sister-in-law nearby. Shortly after my brother, her father died, so did her mother. She's only 33, but a resolute young woman, tough core. I'm currently putting the wheels of her generation in motion.
DeleteHow horrible! It is easy too common a scenario. Last summer a young thing zoomed up over our hill and then list control of her car, going from one side of the road to another, nearly rolling it, and ending up in the ditch. Because she was not hurt, she remained arrogant and flippant about the whole thing. Yes, she had been texting. May Tonia heal faster than expected.
ReplyDeleteTexting, chatting on the phone, drinking anything, stuff your mouth, putting on make up and I could go on. Your in a piece of steal that weighs a lease 1,000 pounds and when it hit something it going to "HURT"
ReplyDeleteCoffee is on
Joanne, you know how I feel. When did we begin to think we were so important that we needed to be in constant contact with folks-even to the peril of other people's lives? NO PHONE, DEVICES or anything while driving except driving> This generation is selfish. It's all about Sesame street song of "I am the most important person.etc' NOT- you are a speck. Stop it now.
ReplyDeleteYou can say that again, Joanne. I feel for Tonia. Cripes.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree. Anyone who causes an accident while texting should have their phone and their car confiscated. (This also applies to pedestrians who don't realise they're crossing the road because they are too busy looking at their ipads.)
ReplyDeleteHope the leg recovers well and quickly.
I wish we had tougher laws on texting. My daughter knows that if she is EVER caught texting while driving, that phone is gone. And if I ever see her in a car where the driver is texting? Same thing. We need some tough love on this.....
ReplyDeleteNO PHONES IN VEHICLES> whether hand held, ear buds etc. NOTHING> our minds do not work in two places at once. NO EXCEPTIONS>
ReplyDeleteSorry I missed this when it happened. Tonia did not deserve this!!!! I do not use my phone at all in my car, even though hands-free is legal. It's far too distracting. And I couldn't agree more with your last sentence!!!
