Today Emily and Hamilton laid stepping stones to get us back out the the sidewalk in the new area while Laura planted the lily of the valley in the bed by the steps.
It took the dolly and three determined youngsters, but the rest of the rocks were planted along the foundation of the house. I'll be interested to see if anyone builds a cairn.
We replaced all the yard art, re-raked the tromped on dirt and then considered our seed packets, the cause of all this work.
Earlier this year the Garden Club put together an array of bee and butterfly attracting seeds. All this work to empty those little packages into the dirt.
Planting.
I've heard them called silver dollars, too, for the translucent silvery flower. I forgot them, but Hamilton didn't. Or Laura, getting that last pesky one covered with dirt.
Are we done?
Waiting for it to grow. Hamilton doesn't know it yet, but I have a sidewalk edger in my car. His next project, next week, after finals and school is out.
We grew the monks money or silver dollar plant one year....word of advice, it is very intrusive, grows quite tall and gets really tangled up. You need to stake them. However, flower shops around here will buy them from home gardeners if you 'shuck' them first. Ours had beautiful purple flowers...it is the seed pods that are the 'dollars'.
ReplyDeleteMore good advice. We'll admire them, and then get rid of them.
DeleteMost grannies have treats for the grand kids tucked in the car...not sidewalk edgers!
ReplyDeleteJane x
But it's a really cool tool.
DeleteThe yard looks wonderful! It's great that you are developing a family of young gardeners. And when they garden, they do things "whole hog" ;-)
ReplyDeleteWe used to call money plants 'honesty' and in France they were called Monnai de Pape: didn't those kids work at this project!
ReplyDeleteIt does look good!
ReplyDeleteI also know the money plants as honesty. Invasive. And I love them.
ReplyDeleteYour yard looks wonderful - such a lot of work, but such wonderful results.
It looks great and will look better when th eplants sprout and grow. Be sure and keep it watered til they get established. Grandkids are good help. So youthful and full of energy.
ReplyDeleteYour garden looks beautiful! When I saw the peonies I thought... "Wow, still blooming this time of year"... forgetting that I'm in SW Texas and you're in NE Ohio.... The peonies there were always blooming in time for the Memorial Day parades - our Girl Scout troop would carry bouquets... march in the parade... then place them on gravesites at the cemetery. Wonder if folks still do that these days?
ReplyDeleteThe garden is already looking so nice, even before the new seeds get growing.
ReplyDeleteI've heard of silver dollar but didn't know they were also called money plant, if I was to google for images, what would I type in the search box? I'll try silver dollar plant.
I can't wait to see photos of when it's all growing.
Well done - you've all done really well. Looking forward to see all those little seeds germinating.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Now we need to see the before and after pics side-by-side. Like they do on the renovation shows . . . :)
ReplyDeleteLooks lovely! I can't wait for my grands to come this summer. Gavin is 9 now and he helped build one of the garden plots when he was 4. We still refer to it as Gavin's Garden. When he gets here he always takes alook at his garden to see what is growing.
ReplyDeleteYou have to be over the moon, the kids will be so proud when it produces. I hope you have before and after pics for the kids. That was a lot of hard work.
ReplyDeleteIf the money plant is the same as Honesty here I love it but can't grow it !
ReplyDeleteThe garden is looking superb and will be stunning when the flowers bloom. Well done to you all.
That was quite a project. Well done! Yes, and the job doesn't end with the planting. There are those pesky weeds that want to join the party and enjoy the benefits of all that soft soil and freedom to grow.
ReplyDeletep.s. love your header photo. Goldfinch just matches the flowers.
ReplyDeleteWhat a huge amount of work - everyone must be feeling pretty satisfied about now! And it will be even better once those flowers grow, and add to the picture.
ReplyDeleteWell done to the whole crew.
What a fantastic family project that turned out to be. You can all be very proud of the beautiful results!
ReplyDeleteI hope they are proud of all their work.
ReplyDeleteI like the new banner pic. Great catch of the bird on the flower.
It is nice to see the kids involved in such a project. Looks great.
ReplyDeleteYou are such a gift to your grandchildren and what a garden you'll be having this summer for everybody to enjoy!
ReplyDeleteEverything seems to be in order and is looking prettier everyday. Can't wait to show us when they're in full bloom :D
